Chapter 37

At the same time, upstairs in Janelle’s hospital room the conversation and finger-pointing between Chyna and Cordell had escalated. Every time Janelle thought Cordell would reveal the existence of the damaging photo, she’d interrupt with a fake pain or whatever it took to bring the attention back to her. There was so much confusion in the room that none of them heard the urgent call for medical attention to the emergency room. And, of course, not one of them gave a thought to the whereabouts of Sister Blackstone or Deacon Athens.

Janelle finally took a stand. And despite the return of her pain and her need to protect Chyna, she realized she needed to protect herself as well. The only way she could do that was for Cordell to shut his mouth.

“Chyna,” Janelle called out. “I need to speak with Cordell, alone.”

“I’m not leaving him here with you to get you all upset before you go into surgery.”

“It’s too late for all of that. Right now I need to speak with Cordell,” Janelle hissed. “And I need to speak with him now.”

Chyna knew her sister well enough to realize there wasn’t any use in arguing. “I’ll be right outside this door. If I hear so much as a syllable raised, I’ll be right back in here.”

“Why don’t you pray while you’re out there?”

The question stopped Chyna cold and it raised an eyebrow on Cordell as well.

“Stop acting like I can’t ask you for prayer,” Janelle snapped.

It wasn’t like Chyna couldn’t pray; she could. With all the baggage she carried, how could she go to God on Janelle’s behalf with any success? She still needed to get her own house in order.

Before today, Chyna felt as though she’d made some headway in her repentance, but then Janelle’s jealousy made her tell Cordell about what had happened when someone drugged her at Cinnamon’s bachelorette party. And she also realized that the only way Janelle could’ve known for sure that something embarrassing happened was if she were sober enough to see it. Janelle had never confirmed anything.

In her mind, at that very moment, she felt that even if God had forgiven her, she just couldn’t forgive herself. How could she when the shame she’d felt before increased in the past hour?

Chyna glanced over at Cordell, who seemed to look straight through her. She was his ex-wife, and he looked as though he didn’t know her at all. She’d been wrong to expect his help.

“C’mon, Chyna,” Janelle pleaded. “I really need to speak with Cordell, alone. We’ll talk later.”

“Say what?” Cordell asked. “What are you talking about?” He was concerned that her meds had kicked in again. She made no sense to him.

“You just stick to dancing,” Janelle quipped with a devilish grin.

“I’ll be outside.” Chyna left the room feeling somewhat better that her sister had signaled her allegiance, but it wasn’t by much.

Before the door closed an inch behind Chyna, Janelle lit into Cordell. At that moment she felt she had nothing to lose and a lot to gain.
